#1. GET INVOLVED- with school activities and sports. In the back page of the SCROLL newspaper (BYU-I's local paper, comes our every Tuesday) There is a calendar of events. You can get involved in fitness programs, intramural sports, visit the planetarium, go to plays and performances. The school has amazing resources available at the students finger tips- why not take advantage. Then, get involved in church, activities and FHE groups. Make friends with your roommates, no matter how weird they are.
#2. HIKE "R" MOUNTAIN, or what is now called the Butte. Get onto Main Street, and get out of town on the way to Beaver Dick- Pass that and in about 10 minutes, turn left when you are close to the mountain. You can't miss it, and there is a road that runs all the way around the mountain. If you go straight over the train tracks, you will be on the front side, keep going until you find the round sanded parking area (don't just park anywhere along the road). A hidden gem we found there was that you can get off the trail and go left until you are canyoneering up the crack of the mountain- super fun. Or the trail is a great walk, but be careful of snakes always. If you go when there is still snow on the ground, there is a section of the mountain you can slide down in the snow-super fun. Whether you go when it's cold, or to watch the sun rise, it is a great experience.
#3 CAMP: If you are single, you need some kind of supervision...or just be good about it but the school owns many camp grounds just down from Main street on the way to R mountain, but on the right side of the road where they keep their cows and things, it's called HENRY'S FORK. It's great, right by the snake river (where you can go tubing down from and get out at BeaverDick park), and there are fire pits and flat ground. There is also free camping at the Nature park.. kinda behind Broulims.
#4 Go to the schools ORC (Outdoor Recreation Center) It's underneath the stadium, and with your trustee starving student card that you never use, get the Kayak deal! Take the KAYAK down to the Snake river (make sure you go with someone who has water experience and take and park 2 cars.) Here is how you get to the best spot.... Go down the road like you are going to Applebees- then get on the highway as if you are going to Rigby. When you see the Shell Gas station (this is about 4 miles down the highway) turn left, go over the train tracks, turn Right at the Stop sign. follow the road until you come to a T-there will be a church on your right, take a right. Follow this road for a long time all along the snake river until you see "Cress Creek"- Get in there, and hopefully you remembered to find a get out point and leave a car there! We found this random picnic table on one of our adventures down the snake!
#5. Speaking of CRESS CREEK- This is a nature trail, that is paved and very easy, with great views. It is a great walk, especially in the summer time of coarse. Just google it to find it... it overlooks the snake river.
#6. Take a Drive to SWAN VALLEY and stop at the lookout points. When you get there, get some Square Ice-cream, it's super fun to eat. It's about 45 minutes away (even more fun if you're on a motorcycle)
#7 Use that whit and charm of yours and make a friend with a quad or dirt bike. The SAND DUNES are world class AND just down the road. Bonfires there are also a good time.
#8 Use that starving student card again and head down to the ORC and get a MOUNTAIN BIKE- they are great bikes and they will tell you about trails to go on.. plus it's always fun just exploring the town and going for a bike ride!
#9. Speaking of exploring- take a drive down PoleLine road, until you see the "HAUNTED SWINGS" It's a great place for a picnic! And to check out Idaho's great potato farm lands.
#10. Visit MESA FALLS. I think they make you pay $5/car because it's a national Park, but it's worth it and only about 40 minutes away.. use MAPQUEST
#11. If you are able to, go on a STUDY ABROAD program, or any kind of group trip. I went on the European Religious History trip for 1 month and got 10 credits... Here I am in Denmark! And that was after we had seen Italy, France, Germany, Sweden and England! Doing this through the school is WAY cheaper than you will ever try to do it in your whole life, I promise!
#12 BEAR WORLD!!! It is a 10 minute drive from campus and SUPER fun. There are bears everywhere and a petting Zoo afterward. They give you free samples of fudge in the gift shop. Go on a buy 1, get 1 free day, because tickets are a little pricey, but you won't regret it.
#13 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK- Again, there is a park entrance fee, but really worth it. Yellowstone was Americas very first established National park. Check out Old Faithful, the wildlife, and all the amazing bubbling water. There are fun trails to go on, and in the town, go to an IMAX movie, or to the PLAYMILL theater- All great experiences.
#14. DANCE and go to dance parties and all the local Indie concerts you can. While you're at it, you may as well live up the PIE SHAKE at SAMMY'S experience and stay for the band or the Karaoke. These things are great to make friends, find a reason to dress up, or to de-stress with your sweet moves.
#15 HIT UP THE LAKE. Whether it be Rigby Lake, Monkey Rock, the SandBar, the Nasty Lake at the Sand Dunes or where ever, you will have a good time, relax and catch a suntan. NOTE: If you are not used to the Idaho sun or usually live at a lower elevation WEAR SUNSCREEN- after bathing in a tub filled with tea bags and cold water and trying everything else on earth to soothe a sunburn, I have learned during my college experience that prevention is key***
#15 GO FISHING. Grab a temporary fishing license from Walmart and find a sweet spot to go. Along the Snake river maybe, or like us in the picture, we went to check out the TETON DAM site and caught some little guys while we were at it.
#16. What better way to blow off some steam during finals than to find a Redneck/hillbilly/cowboy/Idaho local with a gun and go shooting. Another great thing about Rexburg, is that there is lots of open space!
#17 Go for a walk around the beautiful school gardens. They are there, just waiting for you to see them, there are lots of hidden Gems there that are dear to my heart <3
#18 Take a drive to JACKSON HOLE WYOMING. It's about an Hour and a half away. There is plenty to do and lots to look at. It's a cute little town. & of coarse close to TARGHEE NATIONAL FOREST, where you can go snowboarding or Skiing.
#19. I wanted to show you this hidden Gem. This amazing SWAN VALLEY WATERFALL that you can play around on. (wear water shoes) It's on the way to swan Valley. You can get there by foot and climb down into it, or while Kayaking the snake, stay to your left, and you will stumble on it :)
#20. I know so far I have bombarded you with things to do in the summer, so to beat your winter blues midweek, head over to KELLY CANYON
5488 Kelly Canyon Rd, Ririe, ID 83443. On Wednesdays and Saturdays they do student specials and it's super cheap. A small mountain, but it's still fun to go night skiing, and its cheap and super close. |
#21. WHITE WATER RAFTING the SALMON RIVER. Do this through the ORC at the school and you will not regret it. It's a full days activity, and the experience of a lifetime. we LOVED it!
#22. LAVA HOT SPRINGS. Now these are the hot springs that are just outside Pocatello, about an hour away- lots of fun with a big group. There is also GREEN CANYON, which is closer to Rexburg, but WAYYYY trashier. HEIST hot spring is near Kelly Canyon too BUT Lava is the nicer of the 3.
#23. The BEAUTY SCHOOLS. Again, TAKE ADVANTAGE. Yes, they are just learning, but you are a student and are saving your money, so get your hair cut, mani/pedi, facials and waxes at the beauty schools. Paul Mitchell or Evans, whichever you prefer.
#24 SMITH PARK/PORTER PARK/THE FOURPLEX: These are all places you go for a walk/to study, to play sports and pick up games in the summer or to have snowball fights and make snowmen in the winter. You got it!
#25. The TETON VU DRIVE-IN. drive-ins are always fun... just MAKE good choices!!
#26. The CAVES!
Civil Defense Caves or the Ice Caves- Always going to be a good time
#27OBO. The AGE you are when you need to quit changing your major and get serious about school, your future, and leaving Rexburg to get out into the real world. After I press post, I always have more to say, so I'm sure there will be more on the matter- BUT, I don't want to hear "Uggghh, there is NOTHING to do in this small town" EVER :)
These were just a few of my favorite things to do around the town, there are plenty more, from rock climbing at sticks and stones, going to the Duck pond/Nature park, playing frisbee golf, going to the temple and devotionals, wake boarding/snowboarding at Rainbow Lake or snow shoeing at Island Park-
Life will always be what you make it
